Iran armed forces chief sets five conditions for regional security
Major General Ali Abdollahi, Iran's armed forces chief of staff, outlined five conditions for lasting security in West Asia, including an end to fighting on all fronts, full sanctions relief, unfreezing Iranian assets and war reparations, recognition of Iran's sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, and guarantees against future aggression, Iranian state media reported. The proposal came as Qatar said US and Iranian officials were studying proposals to resume negotiations, despite overnight US strikes on Qeshm Island.
Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari said in Doha that a Qatari delegation met Iranian officials in Tehran for more than three hours and that both sides were reviewing Qatar's proposal. "If there were no glimmer of hope, there would be no negotiations," he said, warning that any escalation, whether attacks on Iranian territory or on shipping, would affect the talks. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran's lead negotiator, said, "The ball is in America’s court to prevent war."
US officials reportedly said the military carried out limited strikes on Qeshm Island that did not amount to a resumption of major combat operations, saying Iran had tried to target a US aircraft. IRNA reported five explosions on the island. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it downed two US MQM-170 reconnaissance drones south of Qeshm and destroyed an MQ-9 drone east of the Strait of Hormuz.
