China backs Iran's sovereignty as Wang Yi meets Bagheri
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Ali Bagheri Kani, deputy secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, in Beijing that dialogue is the only viable path and reaffirmed China's support for Iran's sovereignty and security, according to Al Jazeera and Iranian state media. Beijing also said its Middle East envoy, Zhai Jun, will visit Iran, Oman and Saudi Arabia this month.
Wang told Bagheri Kani that dialogue and negotiation remained the only viable path as conflicts in the region drag on and risk further spillover. He also reaffirmed China's support for Iran's sovereignty and security and, according to Iranian state media, opposed a return to military confrontation in the Middle East.
China's Foreign Ministry said Zhai Jun, Beijing's special envoy on the Middle East, will visit Iran, Oman and Saudi Arabia this month. President Xi Jinping separately hosted Oman's Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, the first Omani head of state to visit China since the two countries established diplomatic relations, and the sides signed 14 cooperation documents, including on artificial intelligence, green energy, supply chains and a currency swap. A joint statement called for safe navigation to resume through the Strait of Hormuz and urged the US and Iran to restart dialogue.
