Turkey says US sanctions pressure halted Turkmen gas via Iran
Turkey’s energy minister said Ankara halted imports of Turkmen gas through Iranian infrastructure because of US sanctions pressure. Alparslan Bayraktar said concerns involving the US Office of Foreign Assets Control prevented the arrangement from resuming.
Turkey began receiving gas from Turkmenistan in March 2025 under a deal to supply 1.3 billion cubic metres a year through Iranian infrastructure, with importer Botas holding a licence until 2033. Turkmenistan stopped the flow in October 2025, saying the two countries had only a short-term contract and no agreement on volumes or prices.
Bayraktar said the real problem was the US-Iran war that began in February. “We stopped because of the OFAC, (US Office of Foreign Assets Control), somehow involved in this,” he said, adding that Turkey was not paying anything to Iran but that the situation between Iran and the US escalated. Turkey’s own gas contracts with Iran expire in November 2026, and it is unclear whether Ankara will renew them.
