South Korea to expand anti-piracy unit nearer Strait of Hormuz
South Korea's Defense Ministry said it will expand the Cheonghae anti-piracy unit's operations to waters near Duqm in Oman, about 650 kilometers from the Strait of Hormuz, and seek parliamentary approval to extend its Middle East deployment beyond 2026. The ministry and Yonhap News Agency said the move follows pressure from US President Donald Trump over support for the war in Iran. South Korea relies heavily on oil imports, with about 70 percent coming from the Middle East, mostly through the strait.
