Democrats sweep midterms as Iran war drives voter anger

Democrats won the Senate and, according to Responsible Statecraft, majorities in both chambers in Tuesday’s midterm elections, a rebuke to President Donald Trump. The outlet cited exit polling showing 74% of voters called the Iran War a crucial or major factor in their vote and 62% said military force against Iran was the wrong decision.

Exit polling cited by Responsible Statecraft showed foreign policy played an unusually large role. Gallup found that 77% of registered voters considered the situation in Iran extremely or very important to their vote, and a pre-election survey of six swing states found “ending the war with Iran” was the third most-cited priority after cost of living and jobs.

In Iowa, Democratic nominee Joshua Turek led Republican Ashley Hinson by nearly 5 percentage points with 91% of votes counted, the outlet reported, after Hinson called for a swift end to the war while backing Trump. In North Carolina, Governor Roy Cooper easily defeated Republican Michael Whatley, who had said “the Iran war ends when Iran agrees to not build a nuclear weapon.”

Some Republican strategists said the results recalled antiwar backlash to the Iraq war. Conservative commentator Matt Walsh called the Iran War “the greatest political blunder in the last two decades at least.”
