Report: 118 Baha'i citizens targeted by Iran courts in seven months

HRANA, a US-based nonprofit news agency founded by Iranian activists, documented at least 118 Baha'i citizens, including 60 women and 58 men, facing arrests, prison sentences, property confiscation, home searches, business closures and education restrictions across 11 provinces between March 21 and October 22, 2026. Prison terms totaling 155 years, 10 months and 9 days were issued or upheld against 30 of them, with Fars and Yazd recording the highest numbers of identified individuals.

According to HRANA's tally, the measures were recorded across 11 provinces. Fars and Yazd each accounted for 25 identified individuals, followed by Mazandaran with 23. In Isfahan, documented measures included home searches and the seizure of vehicles, property and work equipment, along with business closures; in Tehran, the report lists prison sentences, deprivation of social rights, fines and property confiscations.

HRANA documented 32 initial arrests during the period, the first on March 21 involving Yasmin Rahmardeh in Yazd. On August 22, five Baha'i citizens were arrested in Sari and transferred to the Ministry of Intelligence's detention facility known as Keshouei, the report said, adding that a source close to one detainee's family said the warrants presented by security agents authorized home searches only and did not include arrest warrants.

Prison terms totaling 155 years, 10 months and 9 days were issued or upheld against 30 citizens, alongside 149 years and one day of deprivation of social rights for 20 of them, according to the report. Afshin Heyratian received a 31-year sentence from Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, of which 12 years would be enforceable if upheld on appeal, and 12 Baha'i residents of Qaem Shahr were tried at Branch 1 of the Sari Revolutionary Court on August 1-3, with a verdict issued on August 20. In Mashhad, Vafa Kashefi was sentenced to six years, part of it suspended.
