Shot twice at Tehran protests, he survived by playing dead

Parviz, a 38-year-old university lecturer and doctoral student, told Radio Zamaneh that security forces shot him twice during Tehran protests on 8 January 2026 and that he survived by pretending to be dead after officers discussed killing him. He spent two weeks in intensive care and said his treatment cost about 200 million tomans.

Parviz told Radio Zamaneh he was shot in the abdomen and then in the leg on the evening of 8 January 2026 near Sadeghiyeh Square in Tehran. He said he lay among bodies and pretended to be dead as two officers dragged him about 20 metres, beat him with batons and kicked him. According to his account, one officer suggested finishing him off and another said he would die soon; the officers then left to confront other protesters. Two nurses carried him into a hospital, where he spent two weeks in intensive care.

He said he was told that 140 wounded people were brought to the hospital that night and that only five survived; Radio Zamaneh has not independently verified these figures. According to Parviz, early treatment costs reached about 50 million tomans a month, his total bill was about 200 million tomans, and it took five months before he could gradually walk and return to university. He described the January 2026 protests as another link in a chain of demonstrations he had joined since 2009.
