Pentagon estimate puts US war costs on Iran above $47 billion

Reuters reported that Pentagon data show the US military has spent more than $47 billion on the war against Iran, and that the estimate has not been made public; the Pentagon did not respond to a request for comment. The New York Times reported that the Pentagon told lawmakers the cost reached $47.1 billion through Oct. 16, with bombs, missiles and other munitions accounting for more than 60 percent.

According to Pentagon data obtained by Reuters, the figure is more than 25 percent higher than the Pentagon's estimate this summer, which Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth put at $37.5 billion. The data include a projected cost of more than $29 billion to replace expended munitions and more than $6 billion to replace equipment and so-called platform losses, including drones. Reuters reported that the estimates did not clearly account for the expected expense of repairing damage to US bases from Iranian missile and drone attacks, and that the Pentagon has not shared the estimate publicly. The cost figures could not be independently verified; the New York Times reported the $47.1 billion estimate as covering the period through Oct. 16, with munitions above 60 percent of expenses, while the Iranian semi-official ISNA cited an American report for a figure of nearly $47 billion through the same date.
