Sri Lanka returns 40 rescued Iranian sailors after medical care
Sri Lanka's foreign ministry said on Sunday that it coordinated the rescue of 40 Iranian sailors from commercial ships in international waters off its coast and helped return them to Iran after providing medical care. Ministry spokesman Thushara Rodrigo said the Iranian embassy requested help through diplomatic channels and that the sailors had suffered unspecified medical emergencies. Middle East Eye reported that local media, including The Hindu, said the sailors were on vessels described as US-sanctioned oil tankers, and that Washington has imposed a blockade on Iranian shipping.
