Putin’s Iran mediation stalls as Tehran rejects uranium transfer

Russian President Vladimir Putin has sought to mediate between Washington and Tehran and offered to receive Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium, but the proposal has gained no traction, according to Al-Monitor. Iran’s security official Mohsen Rezaei said no enriched uranium would leave the country, the report said, and Moscow’s leverage remains limited.

Putin has met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian twice in recent weeks and has repeatedly offered to take Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium, according to Al-Monitor. The report said US President Donald Trump rejected the idea earlier this year, and that after Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s visit to Iran, security official Mohsen Rezaei told Pakistan’s army chief Asim Munir that “even a particle of enriched uranium will not exit Iran at all.”

The report said Putin met Trump envoy Steve Witkoff in St. Petersburg and is expected to meet Pezeshkian again at the Gas Exporting Countries Forum in Moscow. It assessed that Moscow’s leverage is limited because Putin’s priority is improving ties with Washington, while US and Iranian officials appear headed toward another military escalation.
