Iran schools lack shelters and air-raid warnings as war threat looms
According to Radio Zamaneh, Iranian schools lack adequate shelters and effective air-raid warning systems as the threat of renewed war looms. Officials in Hormozgan and on Kish have moved classes online, but the Shad platform and internet access remain unreliable.
Most schools in Iran remain open for in-person classes, but Hormozgan's deputy governor for political, security and social affairs, Ahmad Nafisi, announced that all schools in the province would switch to remote learning from Sunday, 11 October 2026, according to Radio Zamaneh. The Kish Free Zone Organisation said schools on the island would continue remote teaching through Shad, Iran's official online education platform, under a directive from the local Security Council.
The report said Iran has no extensive network of properly equipped public shelters and that no effective air-raid warning system was available during the two most recent wars. During the 12-day war in June 2025, metro stations, mosques and schools were designated as shelters, but some metro stations reportedly refused to admit people seeking refuge. The Ministry of Education has said it will close schools in areas deemed at risk, but has not explained how it will identify those areas before an attack.
Shad's capacity is to be expanded by adding 300 servers; 140 had been purchased by September 2026, with installation scheduled to begin late that month and the remaining servers expected to be operational by 21 November 2026, the report said.
