Some Republicans distance from Trump over Iran war, Epstein
Al Jazeera reports that Republican candidates in competitive US midterm races are quietly distancing from President Donald Trump as the ongoing US-Israel war on Iran and the Epstein files feature in attack ads. Only a handful of Republicans have backed congressional anti-war resolutions on Iran, and Trump has taken action against some who broke with him, according to the report.
The report cites geopolitical adviser Rina Shah saying some Republicans in competitive races are quietly distancing and focusing on local issues because the Iran war and the Epstein case are already appearing in attack ads and soft polling. It notes that in September seven Republican House members joined Democrats to pass an anti-war bill, while similar Senate efforts drew support from only a handful of Republicans. Trump called the lawmakers supporting the anti-war bills “unpatriotic” and backed a rival of Senator Bill Cassidy, who voted for the measure and lost his Louisiana primary.
