Analysis: US never intended Iran MOU to last, eroded Hormuz leverage
A Responsible Statecraft analysis argues that the June 17 memorandum of understanding with Iran was never meant to hold, and that Washington used it to shift maritime traffic to an Omani corridor outside Iran's control. The piece cites U.S. advisories and a Financial Times report on the parallel route, and traces the deal's collapse through clashes in the Strait of Hormuz and repeated U.S. strikes.
The analysis points to a June 18 maritime advisory directing commercial ships to a U.S. Navy contact and a June 23 Financial Times report that U.S. and Western insurers were advising a route on the Omani side of the Strait of Hormuz. It also cites Iran's letter to the United Nations saying the U.S. had unilaterally challenged Iran's responsibility for safe passage and imposed a parallel route. The MOU collapsed after the June 25 Ever Lovely incident, U.S. strikes on July 7-8 that Iran's Health Ministry said killed 14 and injured 78, and President Trump's declaration that the memorandum was "over."
