Trump rules out Iran talks; US envoy claims readiness for standoff
President Trump told reporters the US was "not negotiating" with Iran and that "something" would happen "fairly soon," Antiwar.com reported. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned, in statements carried by state media, that choosing war over diplomacy would bring a greater strategic defeat and hundreds of billions of dollars in losses for the US. Donya-e-Eqtesad reported that the US ambassador to the United Nations claimed Washington is prepared for a long-term confrontation with Iran.
On October 21, Araghchi said in two separate statements carried by IRNA that US threats would cost the American public hundreds of billions of dollars and produce "yet another severe strategic defeat," and that if Washington chose war over diplomacy it would suffer a defeat "far greater than those of the past."
The next evening, Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews that the US was "not negotiating" with Iran and that something would happen "fairly soon," which Antiwar.com described as one of his latest vague threats against Iran. On October 23, Donya-e-Eqtesad reported that the US ambassador to the United Nations claimed Washington was ready for a long-term confrontation with Iran; the report did not set out the scope of such a confrontation.
